Temporality/ Longevity is the topic I'll be discussing. Frank Duffy is a theorist that originally came up with the 'Shearing Layers of Space' concept. Architecture is looked at from a different perspective than just a building.

Frank Duffy notes:

Shell - the structure of the building - 35 - 50 years

Services - The wiring and plumbing work - replaces every 15 years

Scenery - Layout of partitions dropped ceilings - changed every 5 - 7 years

Set - the furniture that can be moved by the occupant

Stewart Brand suggested more layers which included: site, structure, skin, services, space plan and stuff (Brand, 1994)
